Three panels in a row, each with a green tree frog on the same branch against a dark ground

Material experiment

Three frogs on a branch.

Three seperately painted studies of the Australian green tree frog, Litoria caerulea, on a single branch running across all three panels. Self-initiated, made for no purpose beyond wanting to paint this animal and experimenting with a not-so-common medium for me: gouache.

What stays from the scientific work is the observation: proportions, the toe pads, the way weight hangs off a horizontal branch, the difference between a frog gripping and a frog resting. What goes is the labelling. The three panels are one continuous branch, so the set reads as a sequence rather than three separate portraits.

Middle panel: the frog resting along the branch, seen from the side
Left panel: the frog hanging from the branch by its front feet, belly towards us
Right panel: the frog gripping the branch, looking towards us
